South Africa Coalition Talks: DA Wants to Stop 'Anti-Constitutional Takeover'

Описание: John Steenhuisen the leader of South Africa’s biggest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, said he's willing to help the African National Congress form a coalition government "because we want that stable government that provides a bulwark against the anti-constitutionalists.” The ANC won marginally more than 40% of the vote in last week's election. While it could theoretically form a minority government, it would struggle to adopt policies and legislation. To create a workable coalition, it needs backing from at least one of its three main rivals, which includes the DA, to achieve a parliamentary majority. "The DA is not desperate to get into government for government's sake," Steenhuisen said in an interview with Bloomberg's Jennifer Zabasajja. "We will do it if it is the best way to prevent an anti-constitutional takeover."
