I’ve never regretted becoming a violinist… except for one tiny heartbreak: as a violinist, I can’t play Sergei Rachmaninov’s (1873–1943) breathtaking Piano Concertos and pieces. To this day I’m still jealous (the healthy kind!) of pianists who gets to perform it.
And to make matters worse: Rachmaninov never wrote a violin Concerto.
But — there’s hope for us violinists. Fritz Kreisler (1875–1962), Austrian-American violin wizard, charmer, and transcription genius, created a violin-and-piano version of the epic 18th Variation from Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini… It’s a semitone higher than the original — and fits the violin beautifully.
Needless to say, the wonderful pianist Kira Ratner and me were very happy to record the piece together… and it’s impossible not to fall a little in love with this music.
Yours,
Natasha Korsakova
