Patented in 1909 by Walter Mansfield and sold by W. Mansfield & Co. of Liverpool, the Patent Water Finder was, as the name implies, designed to locate subterranean sources of water and oil. However, like every other device in the history of dowsing or "water witching", it was based on unsound pseudoscientific principles and did not work as intended.
