European Bison and the Aurochs are both similar organisms. Both are large, grazing bovids which travel in herds. Neanderthals (Homo sapians neanderthalensis) and Cro-Magnon (Homo sapians sapians) are also very similar. And yet they are so different. Notice how they take down similar prey in different ways. How do they compare?
1. Neanderthals are short and stocky, but very robust, develop and mature quickly, and can afford to come closer to their prey for assault. They are known for Mammoth and Rhino hunts, so a Bison should be simple enough. However, this does not come without a short life-expectancy. A 40 year-old Neanderthal is equivalent to a 90 year-old cro-magnon.
2. Although they are taller and faster, Cro-Magnons have less room for abuse, take a longer time to develop into maturity, and slightly smaller brains than their cousins. So they cannot afford to get too close to an angry Auroch, as they are used to deer and antelope hunting. So they created longer-range weapons for distanced attacks.
