In this video I try to explore what the effect of censorship has on producing stories about crime in China.
I do this by mainly sticking to the idea that films about crime in China follow the restorative justice paradigm and that the movies will always restore a sense of justice at the end of the film and the police (state justice) will always prevail. There is however, enough legroom within stories to be able to explore different types of justice while also fitting this narrative.
This is where films like The Wild Goose Lake come in and while on the surface seem to be a normal crime film, within the context of China show us much more about how crime films effect our perceptions of justice.
