In 1993, convicted serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer gave a prison interview in which he accepted responsibility for his crimes. He stated that he believed he deserved the death penalty, although Wisconsin had abolished capital punishment years earlier.
Dahmer was convicted of murdering 15 people in Wisconsin and admitted responsibility for 17 killings in total between 1978 and 1991. His crimes shocked the United States and remain among the most notorious criminal cases in modern history.
During interviews, Dahmer described his actions as stemming from deeply disturbed psychological obsessions rather than simple hatred. His statements have been widely studied by criminologists and psychologists, but they do not lessen the suffering experienced by the victims and their families.
In November 1994, while serving multiple life sentences, Dahmer died after being attacked by another inmate inside a Wisconsin prison. His case effectively came to an end behind prison walls, where he spent the remainder of his life after his conviction.
Today, the Dahmer case continues to be examined as a cautionary example in criminal psychology, law enforcement, and forensic investigation rather than a story of notoriety.
