Hello neighbors, it's Brad here from etrailer and today we are taking a look at installing the Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit with an actuator. This is gonna be specifically for tandem axle trailers rated with 6,000-pound axles and a bolt pattern of 6 by 5 1/2. And today, it's gonna be on a 2021 Keystone Cougar fifth wheel. And as you probably noticed out on the road, your brakes are gonna do a decent job of slowing down this load as you're towing. But sometimes in a panic stop, all of a sudden you start to feel that weight pushing the truck around. And that's because some of the manufacturers still use drum brakes, whereas we're stepping into the new world of technology and putting disc brakes on.

I think this is definitely an upgrade that if you want peace of mind and just confidence out on the road, having good braking power really makes it to where no matter what comes up, you're at least gonna have a fighting chance to be able to stop without hitting anything in the process. This is a really cool kit because it comes with generally everything that you need to get this installed. And if you've ever done brakes on a car, it's not much different. Your rotors are gonna be Dacromet coated, so they're gonna hold up long term. Comes with all the lines and the actuator.

So really overall, it's gonna be a complete kit and you're gonna get stopping distance that's gonna be significantly better than drums. You'll probably be able to turn down the gain on that brake controller and still get plenty of bite. So if you're looking at doing a disc brake conversion, I can highly, highly recommend it. I've seen the difference that it makes, and I'm gonna walk you through the whole step to show you what's all in the installation and that way you can do it yourself or decide if maybe this is something you wanna get installed elsewhere. Either way, we can see it, and it looks really good behind the wheels, but let's pull it into the shop, we'll get a closer look and see what we're tackling.

Most manufacturers of RVs and campers kind of just resort to drum brakes, and that's because there's no braking standard when it comes to any RVs or campers, which is pretty crazy to think about. And most people say, "Well, my vehicle, my towed vehicle, is gonna be doing a lot of the braking and those electric brakes are just gonna kind of help that." But when you have something that weighs a decent amount of weight and you need to panic stop, no matter how much those electric brakes are working, they really just don't have the bite power that you can get with a disc. So let this be able to really stop along with your truck. It's gonna give you confidence because there's a lot of people out there on the road that it's already scary enough driving a vehicle, let alone a fifth wheel. And when people cut in front of you and you hit the brakes, you wanna make sure that you're stopping.

So disc brakes, this is kind of becoming the new trend for a lot of people. We see plenty of our neighbors really going with a disc brake conversion, and for good reason, it's a better, newer technology that should be on a lot of trailers, but it's not. So this is gonna give you that peace of mind, safety. And honestly, most people with drum brakes, if I ask them, "When's the last time you've taken a look at the shoes" They don't know. More times than not, they're not really pulling it apart to look. I like disc brakes personally because if you're pulling off your wheels, you can take a look at the pads pretty quickly and know if you need to replace 'em. But the main thing is the performance. It really is night and day difference as far as stopping power and the distance to stop. So that I think is well worth it, especially if you're putting a lot of miles out there on the road, traveling the whole U.S., you see plenty of people out there not driving safely, so having confidence with braking is an upgrade I've done to all my cars and I think it's one that you will be very happy with on your camper. The hardest part I think is gonna be, you know, making sure that you have a place to be able to jack this up, to get the wheels off to do all the work.
