Students from NEW HORIZON SCHOLARS SCHOOL, KAVESAR, IB program on a field trip
Seniors at Dr. Menon's Palliative Care were overjoyed to meet a group of 12th graders from the New Horizon Scholars School on August 21, 2023. To celebrate Senior Citizens Day, 35 students and a few teachers from the school visited our centre. Students played guitars as they sang old Bollywood songs. The song selection was so perfect, we could see the seniors singing along with them. Although it was a rainy day, students were quick to adapt to the challenges as well.
Interestingly, one of our resident members was glad to celebrate her birthday on the same day. She enjoyed having the children sing her a birthday song so she could celebrate with them.
The elderly were actively engaged with the students, and gave them blessings. students were given examples by Dr. Menon to help them understand words like "geriatric" and "palliative care," as well as the distinctions between the two. The terms empathy, sympathy, and compassion were also discussed with examples. There was extensive discussion about the palliative care courses. Dr. Menon emphasized the active role that developing children can play in caring for society's most vulnerable members, including the elderly, disabled, ill, and pregnant women.
In every society, one can find members who may require active assistance. Children should recognize them and work together to assist them in one way or the other , they can. This is true community service.
We have observed that social media can sometimes have negative impacts on children, and many of them struggle with mental and emotional problems. Children frequently report feeling depressed and bored. Dr. Menon claimed that there would never be a moment of boredom if one engaged in such community service and asked for blessings in return. Children were also made aware of the centre’s voluntary SAMAY KA KHATA program, and many of them have agreed to return to get involved with this program.
The seniors at our centre were overjoyed to see the students leave with such joy, and as the bus departed, the centre was filled with their loud prayer, Ganpati Bappa, Morya.
