Tricks to remember Layers of Earth's Atmosphere
The atmosphere is a thick gaseous envelope which surround the earth from all sides and is
attached to the earth surface by gravitational force.
Atmosphere protects life on earth by absorbing ultraviolet solar radiation, warming the
surface through heat retention and reducing temperature extremes between day and night.
Air is a mechanical mixture of several gases, vapour and particles.
Air in motion is called wind
Main concentration of oxygen is confined upto 15km.
The percentage amount of oxygen decreases with height.
Composition of Permanent Gases of Atmosphere
Ozone layer is in between 22km to 35km and acts as a filter and
absorbs the ultraviolet rays radiating from the sun and prevent them
from reaching the surface of the earth.
Structure of the Atmosphere
1. Troposphere
2. Stratosphere
3. Mesosphere
4. Thermosphere
5. Exosphere
6. Magneto - Sphere
Troposphere
1. Lowermost layer of the atmosphere
2. Average height is 13km
3. It extends roughly to a height of 8km near the pole and about 18km at the equator.
4. All the changes in the climate and weather take place in this layer.
5. All troposphere temperature decreases with increasing height at the rate of 6.5 degree
6. Celsius per 1000m or 1degree celsius in every 165m. This rate of decrease of temperature is
called Normal temperature Lapse rate (NTLR).
7. Upper limit of the troposphere is called tropopause which is the boundary between the
troposphere and stratosphere.
8. This layer constraints dust particles and water vapour.
Stratosphere
1. Stratosphere extends from the troposphere to about 51km.
2. The temperature increases with increasing height in their layer.
3. Ozone layer is concentrated on the lower portion of the stratosphere
4. The Stratosphere is the boundary between the stratosphere and mesosphere.
Mesosphere
1. The mesosphere extends from the stratopause to 80-85km
2. The temperature decreases with increasing height.
3. Most meteors burn up in this layer upon entering the atmosphere.
4. Mesopause is the boundary between mesosphere and thermosphere.
Thermosphere:
1. Thermosphere is found beyond mesopause.
2. The temperature increases with increasing height in this layer.
3. The temperature at this layer cannot be measured by ordinary thermometers because of low
density.
4. International space station orbits in this layer between 320 and 380km.
5. The ionosphere is found in the thermosphere layer which is located between 80-400km.
Radio waves transmitted from the earth are reflected back to the earth by this layer.
6. The Aurora Borealis (Northern Hemisphere) and Aurora Australis (Southern
Hemisphere) occurs in this layer.
Exosphere:
1. Exosphere extends upto the height of 2000km from sea level
2. This layer is mainly composed of hydrogen and helium
3. The particles are extremely rarefied in this layer.
Magnetosphere:
1. It is the outermost sphere of atmosphere.
2. The extension of this sphere is upto 80000km from sea level.
Note: Heliopause makes the boundary between the atmosphere of earth and the
atmosphere of Sun
