On February 18th, 2023 the East Broad Top Railroad unveiled the return of steam with their newly restored narrow gauge 2-8-2 mikado locomotive number 16. The very first public excursion pulled by 16 was an East Broad Top morning freight train commonly seen in the railroads heyday. Since being taken out of service in 1956, she would wait almost 67 years in silence. But in 2023, 16 finally moved under her own steam and is now the primary power for the EBT’s passenger trains.
The next course of action for the Friends of the East Broad Top is repairing the buildings along the line, the trackage south to Saltillo for more excursion trackage, and eventually restore 16’s sister locomotive, number 15.
