Robotic dieless composite manufacturing is a hybrid manufacturing process for fiber-reinforced thermoplastics. It combines a newly developed incremental hot forming technology with 3D printing, which eliminates the need for costly bespoke tooling and significantly reduces the lead time for prototypes, individual parts, and small series.
Continuous fiber-reinforced organosheets are formed by controlled movements of simple, rounded tool tips in a dual-robot hot incremental forming process, enabled by a digital path planning and control toolchain. The shell-shaped part can then be further functionalized by adding geometric elements in a non-planar, multi-axis, robot-based additive manufacturing process step.
The process is the result of a joint effort by Hamburg based company CompriseTec GmbH, INVENT GmbH based in Braunschweig and the Institute of Aircraft Production Technology at the Hamburg University of Technology.
