She'd read it seventeen times, each word sinking deeper into reality. Wellington Engineering Solutions—the company her mother had built in secret for thirty years, hidden behind layers of shell corporations and nominee directors. The company Sophia had inherited six weeks ago when her mother died, though she'd only discovered its true scope yesterday when the executor finally finished sorting through the maze of trusts and holdings.
David didn't know. She'd wanted to tell him tonight, to share the impossible news that they were about to become wealthier than they'd ever imagined. That the baby growing inside her would inherit something beyond measure.
But the way he walked into the kitchen—shoulders squared, jaw set, eyes cold—made her stomach clench with something that had nothing to do with pregnancy.
"David?" Her voice came out smaller than intended. "How was the meeting?"
