As we gear up for the coming High Holidays at Park Avenue Synagogue, I feel there is no better way to do so than to immerse oneself in the spirit of the Days of Awe.
Our Rosh Hashanah liturgy continually uses Psalm 24:
'Lift up high, O you gates
lift up the eternal doors,
so that the Sovereign of Glory may enter.
Who is this Sovereign of Glory?
Adonai, mighty and valiant,
Adonai, mighty in battle...'
This setting by Naumburg (1817-1890) is very fitting for this dramatic text as it honors the choral march tradition found in grand opera. The piece is enriched with fanfare motifs and a percussive undertone. It begins on a minor key and soon evolves to the major mode, accelerating in both momentum and tempo escalating to a bombastic and joyous conclusion.
This piece was recorded in Berlin for the album ‘Heritage’, featuring treasures of Jewish-German composers.
Like the sound of the Shofar, I hope that this prelude to the magnitude, awe (and even grand opera!), of the High Holidays call on you to prepare yourself for a meaningful High Holiday season.

Lyrics
Lift up high, O you gates
lifted up the eternal doors,
so that the Sovereign of Glory may enter.
Who is this Sovereign of Glory?
Adonai, mighty and valiant,
Adonai, mighty in battle.
Lift up high O you gates
lifted up the eternal doors,
so that the Sovereign of Glory may enter.
Who is this Sovereign of Glory?
Adonai Tz’va-ot
is the Sovereign of Glory.
Forever.
