In a video message, Paul Heslop, Senior Mine Action Advisor to the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Ukraine, highlighted major technological advances, including the use of remote sensing to better assess areas, as well as drones, robotics and mechanical equipment that allow large areas of land to be safely returned to communities.
This progress was made possible thanks to the efforts of international and national NGOs, commercial operators, Ukraine’s national authorities, including the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the Special Transport Service and the National Police, as well as the many brave women and men working in demining.
At the same time, UN agencies, including UNDP, UNOPS, UNICEF, UN Women, IOM and UNHCR, made significant contributions to capacity development, rapid response, mine risk education, safe returns and promoting women’s participation in mine action.
In 2026, particular attention must be given to strengthening skills and supporting first responders. Informing civilians on how to stay safe during and after attacks also remains a priority.
