A cough lasting less than 3 weeks is considered acute, while a cough persisting for more than 8 weeks is chronic. If you're dealing with a chronic cough, follow this simple approach:
✅ Step 1: Get a Chest X-ray
A chest X-ray helps rule out serious lung conditions like infections, tuberculosis, or malignancy.
✅ Step 2: If the X-ray is Normal, Consider These Common Causes
1️⃣ Asthma
Cough-variant asthma presents with a persistent dry cough, often worsening at night or after exercise.
Look for associated symptoms like wheezing and breathlessness.
2️⃣ Post-Nasal Drip (Upper Airway Cough Syndrome)
Caused by sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, or infections.
Symptoms: Frequent throat clearing, nasal congestion, or a sensation of mucus dripping down the throat.
3️⃣ Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Acid reflux can irritate the throat, leading to a chronic cough, especially after meals or when lying down.
Associated symptoms: Heartburn, sour taste in the mouth, or hoarseness.
4️⃣ Medications (ACE Inhibitors)
Common side effect of ACE inhibitors (e.g., enalapril, ramipril) used for hypertension.
Typically resolves after stopping the drug but may take a few weeks.
‼️ When to Seek Medical Help?
Cough with weight loss, blood in sputum, breathlessness, or chest pain
If symptoms persist despite treatment
A persistent cough can be frustrating, but identifying the underlying cause is key to effective treatment!
