In computer networks, topology refers to the arrangement of nodes and connections within a network. It defines how devices such as computers, servers, and switches are interconnected and how data flows between them. Understanding different types of topology is essential for designing efficient, scalable, and reliable networks.
There are several commonly used types of topology in networking:
Bus Topology – All devices share a single communication line (backbone). It is simple and cost-effective but prone to collisions and difficult to troubleshoot.
Star Topology – All devices are connected to a central hub or switch. It is reliable and easy to manage, but if the central hub fails, the whole network is affected.
Ring Topology – Devices are connected in a circular path. Data travels in one direction (or both in dual ring), reducing collisions but making the network vulnerable if one node fails.
Mesh Topology – Every device is connected to every other device. It provides high redundancy and reliability but is costly and complex to set up.
Tree Topology – A hybrid structure combining star and bus topologies. It is scalable and often used in hierarchical networks.
Hybrid Topology – A combination of two or more topologies, designed to take advantage of the strengths of each.
Each topology has its advantages, disadvantages, and use cases. Choosing the right topology depends on factors such as cost, scalability, fault tolerance, and network size.
