This piece took its inspiration from Jean Broc’s painting of Hyacinth dying in his lover Apollo’s arms, after having been struck down by the jealous Zephyrus. Musically, the piece utilizes a hybrid scale combining elements of A major and G minor. Many of the themes are the results of mutations of the Seikilos Epitaph; The sentiment felt appropriate: “While you live, shine/ Have no grief at all/ Life exists only for a short while/ and Time demands his due.”
