Statement of purpose and personal statements for graduate school application are very essential part of the application package. What are the differences between statement of purpose and personal statement? In this video I share with you the differences and similarities between statement of purpose and personal statement.
Along with your academic transcripts, scores on the GRE and TOEFL, great recommendation letters and other documents, statement of purpose and personal statements are very important part of graduate school applications.
Differences between statement of purpose and personal statement:
1. A statement of purpose is for you to write about what you want to accomplish in the graduate school while Personal Statement is about who you are as a person and how that prepares you for success in this graduate program.
2. Statement of purpose will show your academic strengths and background while personal statement will show them your personal motivations and inspirations
3. Statement of purpose is formal but personal statement is less formal as you can put in personal stories, motivations, personal experiences
Similarities of statement of purpose to personal statements:
1. Both focus on your experience and knowledge and how these will enable you to succeed within the graduate program
2. Both are about 1-3 pages double space
3. In both, you must show the graduate admission committee how you fit well into the program.
4. Both require you to show the committee why you are applying into that program
5. Both involve clearly showing them what your long-term goals are i.e what do you plan to do with the degree
6. Both are ways to demonstrate your ability to write creatively and excellently.
