In the early 1980s, Jürgen Barth was quietly working on a new customer racing program for 911 rally cars. Meanwhile, Porsche’s management was deep in talks with Rothmans International, seeking to build upon their Group C successes. At the same time, Rothmans saw an opportunity to expand into untapped Middle Eastern markets, where rallying offered a direct connection to a large and eager audience.

Enter Sean Roberts, head of promotions and communications at Rothmans, a man with deep ties to the Middle East and Porsche’s racing division. When the FIA announced a World Rally Championship series in the region—with Qatar, Kuwait, and Dubai on the calendar—the pieces began to fall into place.
