Before pastrami on rye and jars of pickles defined Jewish food, there were everyday dinners cooked in crowded tenement kitchens. These were the meals Jewish immigrants relied on between 1880 and 1924.Slow braises, simmered soups, baked casseroles, and dishes shaped by ritual, thrift, and routine.
This episode looks at 25 Jewish immigrant dinners that fed families week after week. Cooked on coal stoves and stretched across large households, these meals were not restaurant food. They were Friday food, Sabbath food, holiday food, and ordinary weekday suppers made from tough cuts, simple grains, and whatever could be afforded. Some are still remembered. Others have nearly disappeared.
