The stapes is the smallest bone in the human body, measuring about 2–3 millimeters in length. It's located in the middle ear, and is also known as the stirrup because of its shape.
The stapes works with two other bones in the ear, the malleus and the incus, to transmit sound vibrations to the inner ear:
Sound waves enter the ear canal and vibrate the eardrum.
The malleus vibrates, and the vibration passes through the incus.
The stapes vibrates, and the vibrations pass through the oval window into the inner ear.
The vibrations are processed into neural data and sent to the brain via the cochlear and auditory nerve.
