New Approaches to Teaching Renaissance Art - a Roundtable by Fabrizio Nevola and Eric Hupe with Q&A moderated by Amanda Madden

Fabrizio Nevola:
“Researching the Renaissance city with apps: the HistoryCity CMS as a teaching tool”
Hidden Florence (first launched 2014), uses GPS to deliver first person narrative guides to the historic city, which user navigate using a sixteenth century map overlaid on the familiar modern map system in their phone. In the past few years – also as a response to the pandemic - we have adopted our HistoryCity app platform and content management system as a tool for place-based learning with undergraduate and MA level students. Students work in groups to design app trails that they can then test on a live (yet not public) instance of the app running on their phones; they learn about the city, working as a team, and along the way pick up something about digital approaches to art history and material culture as well.

Eric Hupe:
“Renaissance Art in the Metaverse: Revolutionizing Cultural Heritage Education through Social VR"
I intend to discuss the ZeuxisVR project, highlighting ways in which faculty can incorporate VR/Immersive Technology for teaching art history. Beginning with an overview of the project, I will delve into the sites for which we have developed models and the technology employed in their creation. I plan to emphasize the training of undergraduate research students and underscore how this initiative has expanded our department’s engagement with various forms of digital art history. The latter part of my presentation will concentrate on specific instances of how I integrate VR environments into my teaching, offering insights into effective activities and sharing some challenges I have encountered.
