Based on the Prelude in A major, Op. 28, No. 7, Federico Mompou's "Variations on a Theme of Chopin" is one of his most ambitious creations. The Catalan composer first encountered this work in his youth and was deeply inspired by it. Mompou began composing his variations in 1938, completing the piece in 1957 after nearly two decades of intermittent work. The composition consists of a theme (Chopin's original prelude) followed by twelve variations and an epilogue, each exploring different aspects of Chopin's work while showcasing Mompou's unique style that blends French Impressionism with his Catalan musical heritage. Known for its subtlety and restraint, this piece is considered one of Mompou's masterpieces, demonstrating his ability to bridge Romantic and modern sensibilities in piano composition.
