Before we begin the exposition of divine truth, we must understand why Sage Valmiki chose to use 4 main characters in his epic, The Ramayana, as opposed to 5, which is the number of main divine heroes that Sage Vyasa chose for his epic in order to illustrate the journey of the soul from ignorance to salvation.

In The Baghavad Gita (God Talks With Arjuna), we know definitively that Sage Vyasa used the 5 Pandava brothers and heroes to represent the first five chakras and the elements that correspond to those chakras.

In doing this, Vyasa was able to weave into his epic narrative, the science of divine union, which The Lord Yogananda expounds for the ennoblement of mortally miserable mankind, unworthy of any help from God whatsoever, but O well, He tends to have mercy for all worldly worms.

On the other hand, Sage Valmiki, writing many thousands of years before Vyasa, and in a so so higher age decides to use 4 main characters.
