A massive outage involving Amazon Web Services (AWS) hit numerous websites and apps, causing significant disruption for millions. AWS, which stands for Amazon Web Services, is the web hosting service Amazon offers to businesses to get their companies online.

What Happened? The outage appeared to begin around 3:00 A.M. this morning. The technical issue came down to what Amazon called DNS resolution. This is essentially the mechanism that translates the address typed in a URL into the cloud services that Amazon contracts out to keep things online.

The Scope of the Disruption: The outage affected a wide array of services:
• Major Retail/Tech: Amazon.com itself, Venmo, McDonald's, Canva (a software used by students), OpenAI, Roblox, and Robinhood.
• Daily Life Services: People experienced issues accessing ride hailing services, airlines, and even issues seeing their Ring doorbells.

Data on the Outage: According to Down Detector, a service that monitors outages, over 500 companies reported issues, totaling 4 million plus reports. This figure was more than double what is usually reported on Down Detector.
Resolution Status: Amazon reported that they have identified the issue and made the resolution. As of around 7:00 A.M. Eastern Time, things appear to have been resolved. Many affected companies, including OpenAI, Roblox, and Robinhood, have also reported that things seem to be back up online. While this incident hit a lot of big companies and apps, the scope was smaller compared to historical incidents like the CrowdStrike Microsoft issue involving the "Blue Screen of Death". Amazon has not yet disclosed whether the cause was intentional (like a hack) or an accident.
