A crank bar, also known as a bent-up bar or cranked bar, is a reinforcement steel bar used in reinforced concrete (RCC) structures such as slabs, beams, and columns. It is a straight rebar that is intentionally bent (cranked) at an angle, typically 45° (or 30° in shallower members), near the supports.
Purpose and Benefits:
In slabs and beams, the bottom portion of the crank bar resists positive bending moment (sagging) at the mid-span, while the bent-up top portion resists negative bending moment (hogging) near the supports.
It helps resist shear forces, which are higher near supports.
