3 Monkeys, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Описание: For something a little different today, this pie comes from The Three Monkeys in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, yes, a different country again. They served it up on a plate, topped with some pretty impressive onion rings, along with a few chips. It’s a little difficult to compare a pot pie with your standard Aussie meat pie, but a pie’s a pie, so let’s go with it.

About halfway through, the puff pastry on top was nicely golden brown. Crunchy on the outside, a little softer underneath from the steam, which is pretty much what you expect. The filling was virtually all steak, cooked until it broke apart easily, sitting in a thick, dark, rich gravy. The flavour was interesting—definitely different from what we’d usually get at home.

With the help of our local South African expert, we could clearly pick dried coriander, and nutmeg, plus one other spice I couldn’t quite place. Whatever it was, it worked.

By the end, it was clear this was a big, filling pie. All meat, well cooked, nicely spiced, and very satisfying, especially with the chips and onion rings. It was an expensive lunch (by local standards), around USD $17, but honestly, it delivered. I gave it a five.

If you ever make it to Victoria Falls, which is a true bucket-list destination, this one’s well worth a stop.
