This is an edit from the longer video which can be found at • Catalinbread: Formula №5 with Telecaster
I've had this pedal for a while but have criminally let it lie due to the amount of other stuff that has been vying for my attention. This morning I was thinking about the old tweed amp (Deluxe or Twin?) Fender that Keith Richards drags around with him on tour. We're talking REALLY old, serial # 0003 or something. Anyway, I'd given the Stones stuff a belt with the SFT for the SVT sound (think: Get Yer Ya Yas Out), so I wondered how ye olde Formula №5 would shape up for the tweed. Lo and behold it ripped. I had 20 minutes in the morning before I had to jump in the car and drive 400kms to a gig so I chopped this video out in a hurry. A fitting pic of Batman in a Taschen catalogue was open on my desk so it made a nice backdrop. I'm using my Tele with Brierley pickups through a Laney L5T's clean channel with the Bright Switch off and tones at 12:00. It sure did the job for me. I'll be paying much closer attention to this pedal now.
The Catalinbread website explains the Formula No.5 better than I ever could: "The Formula № 5 was inspired by old tweed amps, most notably the 5E3 circuit. The character of the 5E3 is very unique. It has very minimal power filtering, low plate voltages, elemental tone stack, and does next to nothing to control the low end between gain stages, not to mention the under-rated output transformer and speaker. The entire system runs inefficiently resulting in a loose bass, greasy mids, cutting treble, and incredible grit -- none of these qualities were ideal or intentional back in the day. In spite of this, over the past five decades the amp inspired some of the coolest, most sought after guitar tones ever recorded.
We've captured the unique qualities of these amps in the Formula № 5. For this circuit we felt cascaded JFET gainstages yielded the best result. They have a softer sound than MOSFETs. JFETs also have much more natural attack/decay than diode clipped rigs which are pingy on the attack and fizzy on the decay. We chose capacitor types that enhanced the midrange and burnished the treble."
This video is no Cinnamon Girl (by Catalinbread themselves, one of the greatest demo vids ever) but I hope it gets the sound across. And what a great sound it is.
Cheers,
