Level crossing found beside Nunthorpe station in Nunthorpe within the south of Middlesborough, North Yorkshire. This level crossing is one of only a small handful left to have wheel-operated barriers to the day of filming. These barriers are manually lowered and raised by the signaller from the signal box beside this level crossing by turning a wheel to mechanically 'wind' the barriers up and down (this can be seen through a window of the signal box in this video, and seen more clearly when the barriers raise). The signaller also uses a lever to lock and unlock pedestrian gates located on the side of the road closest to the station here, and there is also a semaphore signal, one of a few within this signal block controlled from Nunthorpe Signal Box, right next to the level crossing for trains heading towards Whitby and Battersby.

This level crossing has no alarms, and the boxes which the barriers are mounted onto only contain the mechanical linkages between the wheel in the signal box and the barrier arm itself, rather than hydraulics and motors which are usually seen to work the barriers. The barrier boxes are a lot smaller than usual as a result, and the barrier arms themselves are Unipart Rail GWE barrier arms. Trains that use this level crossing are expected to stop for a token exchange with the signaller, with Battersby/Whitby-bound trains stopping on the level crossing during the token exchange.

The only trains that use this level crossing on the community rail-run Esk valley Line are those that continue beyond Nunthorpe towards Whitby and Battersby. The station has an hourly service, though trains that terminate here do not use the level crossing. Both these factors possibly explain why the level crossing is still kept as it always has been in 2021, bar the newer barrier arms and LED wigwags.
