China has officially commissioned a new frontline warship into active service. State broadcaster CCTV has confirmed that the Type 052D guided missile destroyer Loudi has entered operational duty with the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), further strengthening China’s rapidly expanding surface fleet.
The Type 052D (NATO: Luyang III) has become the backbone of China’s modern destroyer force. Displacing around 7,500 tons, the destroyer is designed for high-speed blue-water operations, capable of escorting aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships, and conducting independent long-range missions.
At the heart of Loudi’s combat power is its 64-cell universal vertical launch system, capable of firing HHQ-9B long-range air defense missiles, YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missiles, and CJ-10 land-attack cruise missiles. This gives the ship a powerful mix of air defense, sea control, and land-attack capabilities.
Latest CCTV footage also reveals an upgraded radar and mast design, believed to feature a dual-face rotating AESA radar, offering enhanced tracking, wider coverage, and improved resistance against electronic warfare. Combined with advanced sensor fusion and command systems, Loudi can act as both a frontline shooter and a task force command platform.
With over 30 Type 052D destroyers built or under construction, China is producing modern warships at a pace unmatched globally. The commissioning of Loudi highlights how Beijing is combining advanced naval technology with mass production, reshaping the regional and global naval balance.
