সাঁওতালি ভাষায় ‘মারাং’ শব্দের অর্থ ‘বৃহৎ’ বা ‘মহান’ এবং ‘বুরু’ শব্দের অর্থ ‘পর্বত’। অর্থাৎ ‘মারাং বুরু’ শব্দের আক্ষরিক অর্থ হল ‘মহান পর্বত'। মারাং বুরুকে নিয়ে প্রচলিত আছে নানা পোরাণিক কাহিনি,উপকথা ইত্যাদি।
