In this video from Sam Clark we look at three basic climbing techniques to help improve your climbing.
1. Footwork:
Make sure you are placing your toes on the wall making sure you drive through your feet as much as possible.
Step on your foot holds with the toe part of the climbing shoe (around the edges). Don't use the inner foot.
Stepping on your toes will give you more power through your foot and a little more reach.
Imagine a coin sized spot on your foothold and remember to place your foot on that point. This will help place your foot properly on the hold.
Watch your feet as you place them on the holds and place them softly.
Place your foot then reach, place your foot then reach.
2. Body Position:
Keep your hips inside your hands and feet. This way your body will be well balanced on the wall and you won't "barn door" and fall off balance.
Avoid barn door-ing by keeping your feet wide on the wall, so your hips don't come either side of them.
3. Relax arms and use your legs:
Relax your arms. Keep them straight and push with your legs to reach the holds.
As you reach a hold, relax and straighten your arm and lean into a comfortable body position.
Constantly bending your elbow is like doing a chin up every move and can tire you quickly.
