Join me as I set out to hike the "Three Jewels" of New Zealand's Te Araroa trail in under 30 days. Part One takes me from Arrowtown through the Southern Alps to Wanaka and Lake Tekapo.
It didn't go exactly to plan. Between the white-out fog at Stag Saddle, the freezing nights in remote huts, and a diet of cold mackerel, New Zealand reminded me very quickly who is in charge. This is a journey of grit, struggle, and the sheer scale of the Southern Alps.
