Important visitors, such as monarchs and high-ranking officials arrived at Queen’s Stairs to enter the Tower of London. A flotilla of small boats, decked with rich cloth of gold and silk, carrying noblemen, clergy and representatives from city companies escorted Anne Boleyn on her journey of pomp and pageantry along the River Thames from Greenwich Palace to the Tower of London on 29 May 1533, prior to her coronation, two days later at Westminster Abbey. Anne Boleyn disembarked at Queen’s Stairs from her barge and was welcomed by Henry VIII at the top of the stairs.
