STORYLINE:
Nearly 40 trucks carrying fuel to US-led forces in Afghanistan were destroyed in two bomb attacks on the Pakistani border on Sunday evening, officials said on Monday.
About 100 people were wounded, according to a local government official.
The explosions were caused by two bombs planted in the parking lot of a customs station on the Pakistani side of the Torkham crossing, according to an official.
Police later detained nine people, three parking lot attendants and six border guards, for questioning, he said.
Shakir Afradi, President of the Khyber Agency transport association said the blast took place around 7.30pm (1430GMT).
"When we got the information of the incident we came here to rescue the victims," he said.
"During our rescue work another tanker, which was also full of oil, caught fire causing a second powerful blast in which 70 to 80 people were wounded."
Afradi also said that two or three people had died in the attacks, but this was not borne out by any other reports.
Local man Abu Zar was also injured in the attacks.
"We got the information last night around 8:00 to 8:30 that some blast took place in the Torkham tanker parking area", he said.
"Many of them (owners of oil tankers) are our relatives so, with other people we went down to the area. We called for rescue and we also called for the fire brigade. Meanwhile another oil tanker caught fire and a powerful blast happened."
A day after the explosions, fuel was still dripping from the charred tankers, as their owners remained at the scene contemplating their losses
Coalition officials in Afghanistan were not immediately available to comment.
Fuel tankers headed for US and NATO bases in Afghanistan have been repeatedly targeted by militants close to the Pakistani border.
