Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, officially triggered the final excavation breakthrough of the historic Zojila Tunnel, connecting Baltal in Kashmir's Ganderbal district to Minimarg near Drass in Ladakh. Bypassing the heavily snow-bound Zoji La Pass, this project stands as Asia's longest single-tube, bi-directional highway tunnel. It is designed to cut travel times from more than three hours down to just 15 to 20 minutes.
Overview of the Zojila Tunnel Project
Following the breakthrough ceremony attended by Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the Ministry shared key technical details:
Dimensions: Spans 13.15 kilometres in length, measuring 9.5 metres wide and 7.57 metres high.
Altitude: Built under the arduous Zoji La Pass at an elevation of approximately 11,578 feet above sea level.
Total Project Scope: Features an 18-km approach road including vital bridges, bringing the total length of the stretch from Sonamarg to Minimarg to 31 km.
Safety Infrastructure: Equipped with a fully advanced Smart Tunnel (SCADA) system, uninterrupted power supply, modern ventilation, and automatic fire detection.
Cost Efficiency: Built by Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) at a total cost of ₹6,800 crore, successfully saving nearly ₹5,000 crore from early structural estimates of ₹12,000 crore.
