Japanese Architectural Sensibilities explores the essence of Japanese architecture through three timeless themes, coexistence with nature, craftsmanship and sensitivity to detail, and a tradition of innovation. From ancient temples to contemporary design, this short film reveals how Japanese architects continue to create spaces that honor the natural environment, elevate handmade precision, and push the boundaries of modern design. Rooted in tradition yet always evolving, Japanese architecture offers a powerful vision for the future where beauty, balance, and purpose converge.
Joint Conference of the AIA Northwest & Pacific Region and the Committee on Design, co-hosted by AIA Japan. The conference opened in Tokyo on November 13 and continued through November 19, bringing together approximately 150 architects from across the U.S. and Asia including delegates from Hong Kong, Guam, Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Idaho. Chaired by Hisaya Sugiyama, then-President of AIA Japan, the event explored the theme “Crafting the Future” through Japan’s architectural values: coexistence with nature, craftsmanship and attention to detail, and a deep-rooted tradition of innovation.
