The Lesser Spotted Eagle nest visible in the live stream in the Zemgale region has been known since July 2017, when a single juvenile was recorded there. The nest is built in a birch tree at a height of approximately 20 m. Based on the nesting material, it is estimated to be at least five years old, as the lower layers are already partially decomposed. The online camera system at this site was installed in spring 2018. Since then, eagles have been present at the nest every year, and breeding has been successful from 2022 onwards.
in 2026, Uldis and Laila continues to inhabit the nest. One egg has been laid.
In 2025, the Lesser Spotted Eagles Uldis and Laila successfully bred in the birch nest for the fourth consecutive season, successfully raising one offspring, named Grieta.
The camera system at this nest was installed by Jānis Ķuze and Jānis Rudzītis, with maintenance support provided by Valdis Lukjanovs and Ģirts Strazdiņš within the framework of the Latvian Fund for Nature project “Ensuring the Conservation of the Lesser Spotted Eagle in Latvia” (LIFE AQPOM), which was financially supported by the European Commission’s LIFE+ programme and co-financed by the administration of the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund.
In Latvia, the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) is included in the list of specially protected species. Nests are built mainly in spruces and birches, and less often in oaks, aspens, and black alders. The main prey consists of rodents and frogs, with moles and ground-nesting birds taken less frequently.
Latvia hosts the most significant Osprey populations — approximately 4,300 pairs, representing 20 % of the global population. However, short-term changes in population size and breeding success are negative. The main factors are reduced food availability, decreased area and quality of breeding habitats, and hunting of birds during migration in the Black Sea and Mediterranean regions.
Clutch size is usually 1–2 eggs.
