Tiwi Song- Nyngawi Song (Tiwi Islands)
The Tiwi people of northern Australia carry their history, identity, and spirituality through song, story, and connection to Country.
This song speaks of Nyngawi, a well-known figure in Tiwi oral tradition.
Nyngawi is often described as a hairy man of the bush, living deep within the forest and mangrove areas. More than a character, Nyngawi represents the Tiwi understanding that the land is alive, watched over, and filled with presence. Stories and songs about Nyngawi have traditionally been used to teach respect for the land, to protect children, and to remind people to listen to elders and move carefully through Country.
Tiwi songs are not simply music. They are:
*a way of passing on knowledge
*a way of remembering ancestors
*a way of staying connected to land, law, and spirit
This recording is shared with deep respect for Tiwi culture and tradition.
Some elements of Tiwi songs and stories are sacred or restricted, and this presentation is offered only as a general cultural sharing, acknowledging the custodians of this knowledge.
We acknowledge the Tiwi people as the Traditional Owners and custodians of the land and culture, and we pay our respects to Elders past and present.
