Venezuela's main airport keeps flights running despite Trump's threat to shut Venezuela’s airspace

Описание: Despite US President Donald Trump’s threat to fully close Venezuela’s airspace, flights at the country’s Simón Bolívar International Airport remain operational. A passenger noted the threat triggered widespread anxiety among travelers, though people now feel reassured about their current flights and hope for stability.

Since Nov 22, major international airlines including Spain’s Iberia, Colombia’s Avianca and Chile’s LATAM have suspended their Venezuela routes. In retaliation, Venezuela revoked the operating permits of six airlines, emphasizing that the US has no jurisdiction over its airspace.

At a White House cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Trump announced his administration will soon launch land-based strikes against Caribbean drug traffickers, claiming land operations are “much easier” and that US authorities have full knowledge of the traffickers’ routes.

Meanwhile, US military activity in the Caribbean has escalated: US Navy ships and jets were spotted in Ponce, Puerto Rico on Tuesday; Panama and the US also held a joint jungle survival training exercise the same day, involving 25 Panamanian personnel (from national police, air-naval and border services) and 25 US Marines. A US Army Jungle School officer noted the drill was mostly led by Panamanian instructors due to their local jungle expertise.

Trump also confirmed he had a phone call with Venezuela’s leader, during which he rejected a set of requests from Maduro. His Saturday social media post threatening to “close Venezuela’s airspace entirely” has drawn strong international condemnation.
