"Our marriage didn’t last, but we had some wonderful years. I wouldn’t give them back for anything, and we remained friends as long as he lived" - Joan Crawford about her marriage to Franchot Tone.
THESE TWO. I wanted to have this done for Franchot's birthday (February 27th) and I ended up finishing it the day after Joan's birthday (March 23rd). Oh well, IT'S HERE. After three years, IT'S HERE. I'm such a huge fan of both Franchot and Joan (particularly Franchot) and, to be honest, I find EVERYTHING about their marriage to one another absolutely fascinating. I mean, that quote from the end of the video was from 1966 (almost 30 years after they had divorced!). There's so many layers to their relationship, both good and bad, and I have always wanted to make a tribute to them...I'm only sorry I couldn't have made a better one.
A bit of a history lesson for those interested; Joan & Franchot were married from 1935 to 1939, but began dating shortly after meeting on the set of "Today We Live" in 1933. Joan was seeing Clark Gable at the time, but broke it off with him to pursue a relationship with Franchot. Unfortunately, Franchot's career never reached the heights of Joan's, leading the tabloids to refer to him as "Mr. Joan Crawford", a term he despised. His frustrations with his own career, coupled with the fact that Joan suffered an estimated seven miscarriages during their marriage, led Franchot to develop a significant drinking problem. After several physical altercations and infidelities on both sides, the couple divorced in 1939.
Towards the end of Franchot's life, despite having three other ex-wives, it was Joan that looked after him (and even had him moved into her New York apartment) when he was diagnosed with lung cancer and was left wheelchair-bound in the late 1960's. It's even been suggested that Franchot proposed marriage to Joan again in 1964, but she declined. When he passed away in 1968, it was Joan that arranged his cremation. So much for "Mommie Dearest" eh?! DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED.
As I alluded to, I have been working on this video, on and off, for almost three years. I know it's not perfect (far from it) but I'm just so grateful to have finished something!!! I've just feel so broken as an editor lately. Hopefully I can make something better for these two one day...but until then, here's my tribute to Joan & Tone.
As for recommendations, "Dancing Lady", "Love on the Run" and "The Bride Wore Red" are my favourite Joan/Tone films (particularly the first two, which I consider two of my all-time favourite classic films). "Sadie McKee" is pretty good too.
