I was born and raised in Tokyo, and as a native speaker, I’ve seen firsthand how most Japanese learners struggle. Not because they’re lazy, but because they’re learning unnatural Japanese. Textbooks and apps teach phrases that sound robotic, stiff, or childish. The result? Even after years of study, they get stuck in the “foreigner phase”, never truly connecting with Japanese people on a human level.
