The river Shannon has cut through the centre of Ireland since history began, defining the island's history. In the 1920s, as an independent Ireland sought to find itself, they began a plan to harness the ancient river's power and use it to drive the whole country into the modern era. The result was, for a time, the largest hydroelectric dam in the world - and a country that understood that it could stand alone.
Wild Old Times is a podcast about the strange and obscure corners of Irish history, written and presented by Ciaran Conliffe.
