My mom told me the country club party had been canceled, and I felt terrible. Earlier that same day, she had been texting me nonstop, saying she was stressed, that the pressure was getting to her, and that she couldn’t handle everything anymore. That night, my sister uploaded photos of the party. Everyone was there except me. I stayed silent until my mom sent another message. “Send us $2,500 for the mortgage. We’re running short.” I smiled, took a deep breath, and typed back. “I’m not going to be your ATM. Not after what you did.” But before I get to that point, I need to tell you how everything went so wrong.
