"The many twists and turns in the life of a clinical medical physicist: How to prepare for the unexpected”

Abstract:
The entry path for a career as a clinical medical physicist, particularly within the radiation oncology specialty, is increasingly becoming well-prescribed. CAMPEP requirements for both graduate school and residency programs and national certification exams which focus on specialty specific content ensure a relatively consistent knowledge base for physicists entering the field. This talk will explore some of the sometimes surprising turns that a career in clinical medical physics can take. From unexpected changes of duties to the blending of specializations, clinical medical physics goes well beyond the routine tasks of plan checking and machine QA. Specific examples will be used to highlight the many ways that a clinical career can at times be unpredictable. These will include a discussion of the practical and regulatory challenges of implementing a completely novel breast treatment device, radiation safety incidents that ‘aren’t supposed to happen’ and collaborations between the radiation therapy program and other departments that shift conventional notions of specialization. Some strategies for preparing for these events to ensure safe and effective operations will be shared.

Biographical Summary:
Lesley Buckley is a medical physicist at The Ottawa Hospital. She holds clinical certifications in both radiation oncology and diagnostic imaging physics and serves as the radiation safety officer for the program. She is the director of the medical physics residency program and is actively involved in teaching. Her research interests focus primarily on image quality as it impacts radiation therapy delivery, dose from imaging, and quality and safety initiatives. She is also part of a global oncology initiative at The Ottawa Hospital. Outside of work, Lesley enjoys playing squash and cycling and is clinging perilously to the fact that she can still beat her three sons at most sports.
