l'addition - the bill (in a restaurant)
Exemple: À la fin du repas, je demande l'addition.
Traduction: At the end of the meal, I ask for the check.
Fun expression: L'addition était salée! (The bill was really expensive!)
Cultural note: In France, if you want the check at a restaurant, you will have to ask for it. They won't bring it automatically, they don't want you to feel rushed. "Excusez-moi, monsieur. Est-ce que je peux avoir l'addition, s'il vous plaît?"
