Join us on an adventure to Harihar Fort (Harshagad), often called one of the most thrilling and dangerous treks in the Sahyadris! Located in the Nashik district of Maharashtra, this fort is famous for its iconic, near-vertical rock-cut steps that will test your nerves and endurance.
📍 Location: Nashik District, Maharashtra, India (Trimbakeshwar Range)
⛰️ Altitude: 3,676 ft (1,120 m)
🧗 Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult (High endurance required for the steps)
🏰 History: Built by the Yadava dynasty (9th–14th century), this fort was a strategic watchtower guarding the Gonda Ghat trade route. It has seen the rule of the Bahmani Sultanate, the Mughals, and the Marathas before being captured by the British in 1818.
In this video, you will see:
The Scary Steps: The highlight of the trek! We climb the legendary 80-degree inclined rock-cut stairs [09:31]. These 117 steps are carved directly into the vertical cliff face.
The Entrance: Passing through the narrow "Mahadarvaja" (main gate) after the steep climb.
Top Plateau: Exploring the fort's summit, which features rock-cut water cisterns and a small temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman and Shiva [19:34].
Monkey Menace: Watch out for the local inhabitants! The monkeys here can be aggressive if they see food, so keep your bags packed tight [10:19].
Stunning Views: Breathtaking 360-degree views of the Vaitarna reservoir, Brahmagiri, and Anjaneri forts from the top.
Getting There:
Base Village: Nirgudpada (Kotamwadi) or Harshewadi.
Distance: Approx. 40 km from Nashik City and 48 km from Igatpuri.
⚠️ Travel Tips:
Avoid trekking during heavy monsoon rains if you are a beginner, as the steps become slippery.
Carry at least 2-3 liters of water.
Be careful with drones and food around the monkeys.
