December 9, 2020 - Shenjing He, Professor of Urban Studies in the Department of Urban Planning and Design, and Director of the Social Infrastructure for Equity and Wellbeing (SIEW) Lab at The University of Hong Kong, speaks at the Mansueto Institute's Lunch Colloquium Series.
Deriving from deep historical roots, enclave urbanism in contemporary China has been evolving into various forms and connotations. In this talk, Shenjing expands the scholarship of enclave urbanism along two dimensions. She first presents a recent study on a special form of migrant enclave nested within resettlement housing estates in a special economic zone. The second half of the talk examines the changing perception of gated communities among Chinese citizens amidst the Covid-19 outbreak and discusses its long-term implications on residential segregation and exclusion.
Shenjing He's research interests focus on urban redevelopment/gentrification, enclave urbanism, urban governance, low-income housing, rural-urban interface, and health geography. Shenjing recently launched a research project to investigate the emerging forms of neighbourhood order, including for example, gated communities featuring privileged access to education service, and another project to examine multi-dimensional housing inequalities in pandemic-stricken megacities.
