Описание: Mauritania, at the far west of the Islamic world, was known in the days of French colonial administration as the vide / the 'emptiness'; across the ages within the Islamic world the region has often been identified as a home for heretical extremes. At the same time it's historic moniker, "Shinqit," has also been synonymous with a land of poets in the heartlands of Islam, and the literary production within nomadic schools in the Sahara during the past 300 years is on a par with that of most urban centers of Islamic scholarship. Two long-term observers of the Mauritanian scene will attempt to reconcile these conflicting images and to sketch the influence scholars there have had on the development of Islam in West Africa.
