Today Kevin and Dave tackle a small back yard blasting job in Melbourne's outer North Eastern suburb of Lilydale. The customer recently pulled the back fence down to get a big excavator in to re shape the back yard and prepare for a rear deck extension on the home. The big machine was able to manage 99% of the job, only a small section of very hard rock was encountered just outside of the back door.
The rock type is is Devonian-aged Coldstream Rhyolite - a really hard Grey / Brown rock that looks like baked mudstone and is a challenge for large excavators with breakers. The excavator was gone and the fence fixed so there was no chance of covering the blast with soil so the decision was taken to drag heavy blast mats up onto the site, Dave and Kev knocked it over in just a few hours.
Another difficult earthmoving problem solved with the skilful application of high explosives, no incidents and no complaints.
